NOTES: Ghostlight (2013) was written for Jacob Greenberg and is formed in four large sections framed under a single arc. Some of the most memorable piano recitals for me feature problems with the mechanics of the instruments - a broken string, an errant hammer, etc - that punctuate the performance. Rather than marring the experience, this disruption of the piano's ordered linearity makes my ears perk up, and I find myself looking forward to the next time that one oddball note out of 88 will be played again. The title refers to the single bare bulb that is left onstage in a dark theater, transforming the interior space. It is this potential for transformation that fascinates me about preparing the piano - hearing its familiar and orderly body altered from within, as if illuminated differently or occupied by some mischievous entity - and gives context to the unprepared notes.
