NOTES: Winnow is scored for frame drums, which are considered to be among the earliest and most ubiquitous constructed instruments. The piece begins by separating and stretching the basic sounds of each drum, using friction to counteract the natural decay. Once exposed, these sounds are recombined in a rhythmic framework, as if played by a single drum with many voices. Winnow was commissioned by and written for the Ethos Percussion Group.
