Notes: Dowser is an exploration of the bass clarinet's overtone series, in search of its fundamental. The gentle articulations of breath are developed in the rougher beatings of the clarinetist singing in near unison to notes played on the instrument. The chorale section consists of multiphonics played in succession, and all the sounds are produced acoustically, extended with the help of electronic delay. Once arriving on its lowest note, the bass clarinet fragments a motive which is further fragmented by choppy delays. The piece was written for clarinetist and sound-dowser Joshua Rubin.
